HELLOTUNA's B DAY!

it's been one year... whaaat!?
i remember being stuck at the monstrously hot arapahoe apartment last summer...
seeking solace from the heat by sitting still and browsing endless food blogs via tastespotting
and finally deciding to wing it for myself.

here, gawk at my silly awkward beginnings:

i still plan to make my blog birthday meal and post, but this weekend was quite busy!
hopefully this week that will happen.

but first, let me tell you about my weekend.
a pizza lunch for family friends moving back to korea :(

prosciutto, red pear, gorgonzola, parmesan, garlic.
on thin crust, topped with arugula and olive oil.
i thought the light toppings would work well on a thin crust.
sweet pears, salty prosciutto, stinky gorgonzola, bitter greens.
well balanced indeed!
deep dish before entering the oven
after the oven.. like a crazy flower!
mozzarella and extra sharp cheddar, hot italian pork, bacon, artichoke hearts, onion.
i put twice as many toppings as usual this time! two layers of meats and 3 layers of cheese.
the crust bloomed over the pan while the middle became a rich and delicious sinkhole.

southwest style: mole sauce, pepper jack and cheddar, black beans, corn,
ancho chicken, chipotle peppers. topped with fresh cilantro and sour cream.
a fun, colorful pizza. mole sauce really made the difference!
fettuccine in vodka sauce w peas and shrimp
we also prepared this pasta dish, and a salad that i forgot to take a picture of.
but here is most of the ensemble... ate sooo much!
bombbbbbb

also, this weekend was father's day weekend.
for s's dad. cricket bat!
s and his dad love cricket! the icing job is a bit sloppy,
but i made this cake under a serious time crunch.
2 layers of vanilla cake, whipped cream, homemade mango caramel sauce,
diced fresh mangoes and bananas.
all sealed with a ginger-cream cheese frosting. tropical and yum!

of course i had to make my dad a cake as well.
this past may our family went to las vegas... it was my first time there since turning 21!
the first day out on the gambling floor w my dad, we discovered an exciting slot game.
THE WIZARD OF OZ!!!
mixed emotions for the wizard (please ignore my odd smile)
i dunno what it was.. maybe the bright colors, or the surround sound?
but the wizard of oz sucked us dry! so addictive.
we shared much frustration as we continued to return to these slots a few times a day.
to commemorate our defeat, i made a wizard themed cake.

beh....blurry pictures...
emerald city!
first of all! in my defense, i did this cake in 3 hours.
start to finish...mixing, baking, cooling, filling, frosting, decorating. 2am - 5am. (don't ask)
in addition, i did not have ANY of my decorating supplies w me.
so this cake really tested me, and it did not turn out too horrible, considering.

remembering my dad likes pecan pie, and of course chocolate cake, i married the two ideas.
turtle cake!
2 layers of chocolate-pecan cake, whipped cream, homemade caramel sauce, chopped toasted pecans.
all blanketed in a delicious chocolate sour cream frosting, topped with buttery crackers and vanilla frosting.
not cloyingly sweet, a good crunch from pecans, and pleasantly rich.
the chocolate sour cream frosting has such a good mouthfeel.

we enjoyed this cake after a father's day full of fishing and burgers. quite classic :)
my dad is so great
ah what a long post! so many blessings and lessons throughout the last year of blogging.

to my family both here and overseas,
my friends who put up w my constant pics of food,
random people who have skimmed through my page,
talented bloggers w gorgeous sites who graciously gave me tips...

thank you to you all...! what a year it has been.
can't wait for this next year..hungry for more.
